2026 Hailed as the Age of the Croaking Craze.

My key observation from the recent Day of the Devs showcase was highly engaging, my biggest takeaway was not the intended one: I am declaring that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.

A surprising total of five of the showcased games—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these leaping protagonists. Given that a collection of frogs is termed an army, it seems they are launching an invasion.

A Legacy of Leaping

Croaking characters are far from new to the gaming landscape. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a special place. However, their popularity has markedly surged in recent times.

A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an staggering number of results. Although, some of these are obscure titles, a significant portion are serious Frog Games.

A Data-Driven Dive

To understand this phenomenon, I performed a thorough analysis into the recent history of frog-related gaming on Steam. My criteria was admittedly subjective, counting games with frogs in the title or featured in screenshots.

The results paint a clear picture: a consistent uptick from under 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.

This dramatic growth prompts the question: what's driving this craze? The amphibian's elevated place in the cultural zeitgeist is somewhat evident elsewhere, like the popularity of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. Yet, the wave in gaming seems uniquely pronounced.

The Allure of Amphibian Mechanics

In my opinion, this is a shift I can fully endorse. Frogs offer built-in appealing traits for game developers.

  • Unique Characters: They are incredibly easy to be designed as endearing characters that tend to be a standout feature in any game.
  • Innovative Systems: Their stretchy limbs and prehensile tongues enable a host of creative gameplay ideas.

Many of the announced projects smartly employ these traits. For instance the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the elasticity-based puzzles of Stretchmancer.

On the Cusp of a Croaking Renaissance

So, what can we expect in 2026? Given five frog games confirmed for release before the year has even begun—and the potential for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the most significant year for amphibian gaming.

If these games perform well—and based on past trends, games from this showcase often do—we could very well be on the verge of a true frog gaming renaissance.
