Synthetic graphics purporting to portray Nicolás Maduro under arrest following his apprehension by the American authorities have amassed tens of millions of views on social media.
The Way AI Images of Maduro Surfaced Within Hours
Initial inauthentic synthetic picture apparently showing him being escorted off a plane circulated shortly after. This image was absent from any official US channels; it was instead published on X by an profile describing itself as an “enthusiast of AI-generated art”.
Our analysis used the SynthID tool, confirming the picture was created or altered with AI tools.
More AI-generated images started circulating in the subsequent hours, appearing to show additional perspectives of the leader under guard. Discernible watermarks on the graphics show they were posted by an Instagram account called ultravfx.
The detection tool confirms the further images were similarly generated or edited generative models.
Real Photo Posted but Fakes Continued
Donald Trump posted the first real photo of Nicolás Maduro handcuffed aboard the US Navy ship on that morning. But even after this real photo was released, AI-generated pictures kept circulating but were altered to show the gray sweatsuit seen on Maduro.
Reverse image searches show these altered fabrications were first posted on TikTok by a digital art account. Once again, the AI-watermark detector says the new graphics were generated or edited Google AI.
