The US-based company Waymo has declared that its autonomous vehicles will be on offer for hire on London's streets starting next year.

London will become the pioneering European city to introduce an autonomous taxi service, similar to those already in use in multiple US cities and several American cities employing Waymo's innovative technology.
Preliminary Operations to Commence with Safety Drivers.
Waymo confirmed that its vehicles are currently traveling to London and will begin navigating on the city's streets in the near future with safety drivers behind the wheel.
Waymo – initially established as a derivative from Google's autonomous vehicle program and belonging to the Alphabet family – stated it would increase services and partner with the UK transport authorities and Transport for London to acquire the necessary approvals to offer totally self-driving rides by 2026.
Expanding Involvement in Self-Driving Transport In London.
Further organizations, including Uber and the UK-based tech company Wayve, have also declared their own plans to test driverless cabs in the city next year.
This follows the government officials stating it would speed up rules permitting real-world tests to proceed before legislation allowing self-driving vehicles becomes law in full.

A broader rollout of autonomous cabs is expected in the UK after the related legislation is fully implemented in 2027.

Waymo presently has ties to the UK after launching its first European engineering hub in Oxford in 2019.
It is furthermore introducing services in Tokyo using JLR electric vehicles, marking its second present project beyond the US.
